How to Get Bakery Style Muffins
No one can resist a light, fluffy muffin and we’re here to tell you that it’s totally possible to make your own bakery-style muffins at home! Here are some tips to help you bake the best muffins every time!

Tips to ensure that you get the perfect rise, texture, and flavor
01. Use Room Temperature Ingredients
Room-temperature ingredients are essential for the muffins to rise and bake evenly. When ingredients like butter, eggs, and milk are too cold, they don’t combine well, which can result in a dense, uneven texture. Room temperature ingredients blend more easily and contribute to a smoother batter. Take your ingredients out of the fridge at least 30 minutes before baking! If you’re in a hurry, you can warm butter gently in the microwave for about 10-15 seconds, and eggs can be placed in a bowl of warm water for a few minutes.
02. Buttermilk
Adding buttermilk is our secret to getting a light and fluffy texture. The acidity in buttermilk helps break down gluten, which results in a softer crumb. If you don’t have buttermilk on hand, you can make your own by adding 1 tablespoon of lemon juice or white vinegar for every 1 cup of milk.
03. Be Careful Not to Overmix the Batter
Overmixing is a common mistake when baking muffins, which results in a tough, dense texture. Muffins should have a slightly lumpy batter. Using a spatula, gently fold the ingredients together just until combined and no flour streaks remain. A few lumps are perfectly fine!
04. Toss Your Add-ins In Flour
If you’re adding berries, chocolate chips, or nuts, they could sink to the bottom during baking. A simple trick to prevent this is tossing them in 1-2 tbsp of flour. The flour helps create a light coating that will keep the berries evenly distributed in the batter.
05. Fill Muffin Cups Generously
If you want tall, bakery-style muffin tops, don’t be shy when it comes to filling your muffin tin! Instead of filling them halfway, fill them nearly to the top. This will allow the muffins to rise higher, creating that beautiful dome shape. We recommend using a cookie scoop to divide the batter evenly into the muffins tins.
06. Top With a Crumble, Icing, or Both
To elevate your muffins, add a delicious topping! For a quick crumble, mix 1/4 cup flour, 1/4 cup sugar, and 2 tablespoons melted butter, then sprinkle it generously on top of your muffin batter before baking. For the icing, mix together powdered sugar and milk and drizzle over the muffins after they’ve cooled.
07. Bake at a High Temperature
Baking at 375°F (190°C) will help the muffins rise quickly, resulting in a dome shape and light texture.
08. Do not Overbake
Use a toothpick test to avoid tough, dry muffins. Insert a toothpick into the center of a muffin and if it comes out clean or with just a few crumbs clinging to it, the muffins are done.
