This double chocolate chip banana bread takes the classic homemade favorite to a whole new level, combining rich cocoa flavor with melty chocolate chips and naturally sweet bananas. The best part is that everything comes together in just one bowl in less than 30 minutes, making it an easy treat to whip up whenever you have overripe bananas on hand.

Gather your ingredients

  • Unsalted butter
  • Brown sugar
  • Egg
  • Vanilla extract
  • Ripe bananas
  • Buttermilk: you can make your own by mixing 1/4 cup milk with 3/4 teaspoon lemon juice or vinegar and letting it sit for 5–10 minutes
  • All purpose flour
  • Cocoa powder: use natural (not Dutch-process) cocoa powder for this recipe
  • Baking soda
  • Salt
  • Chocolate chips: dark or semi-sweet chips add pockets of melty chocolate throughout the loaf

How to Quickly Ripen Bananas

In this recipe, it’s important to use overripe bananas for sweetness and moisture— the riper, the better! But don’t worry if your bananas aren’t quite ripe enough. You can easily speed up the process by placing them on a baking tray lined with parchment paper. Stick them in the oven at 250°F for 20-30 minutes, until the peels turn dark and they become soft and syrupy. Just be sure to let them cool completely before using them in your batter. The darker the banana skin, the richer the flavor will be, so this trick will help you get the perfect loaf!
